今回とりあげられているのは、ジョージ・オッペン（George Oppen）

オッペンの作品の骨組みは、言葉というよりも物でできている。家を建てるように詩を作る。建設現場を書いた詩もある。

ここで取り上げられた詩の抜粋をば。訳詩はもちろんアーサー・ビナード氏によるもの。

The Building of the Skyscraper

There are words that mean nothing
But there is something to mean.
Not a declaration which is truth
But a thing
Which is. It is the business of the poet
"To suffer the things of the word
And to speak them and himself out."

言葉が意味をなさなくなろうとも、
言わなければならないことがある。
もっともらしい真理の宣言ではなく、
そこにある
事物だ。詩人の仕事は
「この世にある事物を受け止め、自身も
含めて、それらを言い放つ」。
